Fans of country music and beyond will be aware of the contributions made to popular music by Bradley, as his efforts in crafting the Nashville sound throughout the 1950s and 1960s are undeniable. This Altec desk was built in the mid-1960s and utilized by Bradley throughout the remainder of the decade.

Housed in Bradley’s Barn until around 1970, the Altec console was removed just in time, as the studio space eventually burned down. It was stored away for years in a shed until Kevin Augunas found the console during his search for a desk that showcased the classic Langevin and Altec sound. Once Augunas purchased the console, the desk was completely refurbished and restored to its former glory.

Since finding a new home in Studio A of Fairfax Recordings (formerly Sound City Studios), Augunas set straight to work on the desk by mixing The Lumineers self-titled debut album featuring the hit “Ho Hey.” In the time since, the producer, engineer and mixer has worked on a wide range of projects on the console including sessions with Lenny Kravitz, Booker T., Mike Snow, Dave Grohl, Gotye and many more.

Console Specifics

The main Altec board has 16 inputs, 12 of which have preamps and four of which are line input. There are four busses on the console, and each channel can go to only one buss. Depending on which buss is selected, you get the echo send for that buss. For example, if you have three channels assigned to buss 1, all of their echo sends get combined into one signal, available at a patch point. On every individual channel, there is a post fader send to the echo buss.

There are passive inductor-based EQs on each channel, and you get a choice of 40 or 100 Hz on the low end and 3K, 5K, 10K or 15K on the top end and it’s +12dB, -16dB, in increments of 2dB. These EQ's provide very broad, musical brush strokes.

There are two pan pots on the left side of the Altec console to allow you to pan a signal between two busses. You can patch into them with a mono signal, and select which two busses you want to pan across with the switches directly above the pan pots. Both pan pots feed the same two selected busses. For example, for LCR mixing, you could use bus 1 for L, bus 2 for R, and bus 3 for C, where the output of bus 3 would patch into a pan pot to be split evenly between busses 1 and 2.

The console has a fully-normalled patch point post-mic preamp and pre-EQ/channel fader. This is the direct out, and the signal comes straight off a 9470a mic preamp to the patchbay. There is no volume control before the patch point, and the 9470a is a fixed 45dB gain preamp, so you need to use an external level control. Over towards the right part of the Altec board, there are 8x 600 Ohm rotary attenuator knobs in a vertical line which are convenient for this purpose, on XLR pig tails and patchable.

There is an echo return on each of the 4 busses that will sum into your buss signal before the buss out patch point.

There is 45 dB of gain in 9470a preamps. There’s no pad, there’s no phantom, there’s no polarity reverse. There’s a talkback switch that can be manually engaged that provides talkback at a patch point. There are three different playback sources for the control room monitors, selectable via switch, and a volume control. Those sources are mirrored for studio playback, and a separate volume control is provided.

There’s a meter pad knob, so you can pad the four buss meters from +24dB to +4db to in increments of 2dB. There are four echo buss meters that are horizontal VU's and two very sweet-sounding 9062A graphic EQs built into the meter bridge of the main Altec board.

The monitor board is 16 channels with an additional mono echo return. There is left, center, right panning on switches, no pan pots.

All faders are Gliss faders, and the monitor board has two mono sends per channel; one post fader for echo and one pre fader for cue.

The monitor board is transformer isolated on input and output, uses passive summing, and uses a pair of Altec 9470 amplifiers for makeup gain.

Restoration work was done by Ken Hirsch at Orphan Audio.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0658/8848/5479/files/brokered_62000_1_7e03bcbe-d4cc-4df5-950f-d817c72ac2ae.jpg?v=1787091240
altec-250t3-rare-60s-consolette-used
Altec 250T3 - Rare 60s Consolette (Used)

Console Configuration from Left to Right of the center:

4 Line Inputs

Selectable - 2 Phono Inputs / 2 Line Inputs

2 Line Inputs

2 Mic Inputs

Console comes with 2 spare 9475A Preamp modules

Includes XLR pigtail input and output harness

Direct outs are post-fader and work well for feeding A/D converters directly. Perfect for extra tracking preamps, a cool and different centerpiece to your DAW, or as a sidecar to a larger console. Direct outs are post-fader and work well for feeding A/D converters directly. Awesome early 1960s feel and sound without breaking the bank!

The console is designed to track 16 channels of mic pres with direct outs, while mixing/monitoring 16 channels of your recorder at the same time. Since all the rotary attenuators are stepped, it works great as a very recall-able hybrid mixing environment with 8 mono, and 4 stereo inputs feeding a classic LCR or LR mix buss. While mixing, you can run your line level signal back into the console clean through peerless transformers, or run back through the 9475 amps and into the console for extra flavor. This is the same mix topology and amplifiers used in the famous Altec 9200 consoles you see at Electric Lady in NYC, and Dan Aurbach's Easy Eye Sound in Nashville.

The package consists of one main 16x3 LCR mixing console (highly modified 1960s Altec 250T3), and two custom sidecars. The "Attenuator Sidecar" contains custom input pads, line input transformers, stepped output attenuators, and routing for the 8x 9475 Mic amplifiers inside the main console. The other "8x Channel Sidecar" is a separate stand-alone consolette with 8 channels of Altec 9475 modules, with custom input pads and stepped output attenuators. The 16x input selectors on the sidecars allow you to run dynamic mics, condenser mics, or line levels into the 16x 9475 amplifiers. There's also a three position pad for taming hot levels ahead of the preamps (-6, -12, -19), and a 12 position output attenuator (1.5db per step) for trimming hot outputs.

There are a total of 23x Altec 9475 modules, 16x wired as preamps, 6x in the mix busses, and 1x as a spare/backup. There are 19x Peerless and coil line input transformers through out the setup for line inputs and monitor outputs. There are also 2x custom racked Acopian linear power supplies included, one for the main console, one for the 8X channel sidecar. All 9475 modules have been completely recapped with Sprague TE caps and re-resistored with precision matched PRP audio resistor pairs. Any out of spec transistors were replaced with NOS mil spec replacements, and the package comes with a large set of extra transistors for the life of the console. They have also been updated/modded with John Hall's (designer of the 9475/9470) original hand drawn mod notes that stabilize the amps.

The main console has its own Green formica with metal edge banding desk, and the two sidecars sit on top of two separate black 13u steel racks with matching green formica tops.

MAIN MIXER AND LCR BUSS

Main console has 16x inputs that mix into the 3x channel LCR master mix buss. Its comprised of 8x mono, and 4x stereo rotary attenuators and assign switches for the placement of the 16x inputs to L (left) C (center) or R (right) master outputs. Each of the 3x master mix busses uses 2x 9475 amplifiers. The first amp is used as a booster for passive mix make up gain, and the second as a program amp for driving the output. Each buss has a "master gain" stepped attenuator in between the two amplifiers for lots of gain staging flexibility, super clean/classic hi to yummy blown out distortion. There's also a "master attenuator" that trims all three channels at once.

Each of the 3x master mix busses have switchable inserts between the two amplifiers that are patchable on the rear break out box, and switched in and out with three pushbuttons on the front of the console. There's also a second switchable insert point that bypasses the internal first stage 9475 booster amps, and allows the use of external preamps as boosters for different flavor (basically any mic pre). The 3x Master Mix busses each have their own output for fully discreet 3x channel LCR mixing. You can also run it in "Stereo Mode" by turning the Center master attenuator fully counter clockwise. This disconnects the Center channel output and routes it to a splitter matrix that feeds it equally to the left and right main outputs, giving you standard two channel stereo out.

CHANNEL DESCRIPTION

The 8x Mono channels feed a mono stepped attenuator, and can be assigned Left, Center, or Right on the mix buss with the LCR toggle switch over the attenuator. -Each mono channel can be feed by a mic pre (9475 amp), or a Line Level input (through 15095 transformer). Routing for this is handled by the "Preamp to Mix/Pre amp to Direct" switch on the Attenuator Sidecar. Each can be routed "Stereo Left/Right" or "Dual Mono" with the mix assign toggle switches above the attenuator. "Stereo Left/Right" routes left to L-buss, right to R-buss, and "Dual Mono" routes both channels to the C-buss.
