The Dirty Little Secret has earned itself a well-deserved reputation for replicating the sound and feel of a classic-era Marshall amplifier, supplying one of the most iconic guitar sounds in music. Able to clean up with a flick of your guitar's volume control, or go from mild crunch to full kerrang with your pick attack, the Dirty Little Secret has seen the inside of arenas and bedrooms alike, providing great overdriven sounds to clean backlines, low-wattage amps, and even direct applications. When the JFETs used as the base for the Dirty Little Secret were discontinued, and as our stock of them began to dwindle, we knew we had to find ones still being manufactured. However, rather than simply re-voicing around these new JFETs, we decided to push the envelope and provide an amazingly robust feature-set, from ever-evolving listening and circuit skills, and pure power of intention. This isn't just a "Marshall in a box," it's the most versatile and dynamic Marshall-style overdrive out there!

What's new in the Dirty Little Secret:

The DLS now offers two distinct voicings, "Super Lead" and "Super Bass," switchable via an internal slider switch

Completely redesigned full three-knob treble, middle, bass tone control complement that reconfigures for each mode setting

There's also an added internal presence trimmer that allows you to fine-tune the presence of the pedal precisely to your guitar and amp combination

The gain range is much wider and even more responsive to pickup types, playing dynamics and instrument volume knob!

The "Super Lead" mode expands the range of the DLS MkII with more gain available and more control over your tone sculpting with the addition of the midrange control without losing any of the touch-sensitive dynamic qualities that made the MkII so great to play – in fact, those qualities have been enhanced. The gain range now goes from classic plexi all the way to modified JCM800 levels and can get even more raw and open than any previous DLS. Inspired by the Maestro Echoplex, EP-3 model, perhaps the most famous tape delay ever, the Belle Epoch features everything we love about the EP-3 in a small, maintenance free pedal format. We felt that a “tape echo” pedal was much more than just a standard digital delay with some “filtering” on the repeats. There are a lot of subtle and not-so-subtle traits of the Echoplex that needed to be implemented in order to be authentic. The preamp, the self-oscillation character, the ability to play the pedal as an instrument unto itself, the ability to control the “record level” of the signal hitting “tape”, the wow and flutter, the way the repeats decay, the way the circuit interfaces with the amp and other pedals - all these things were important to get right.

The Belle Epoch was designed to be run in front of your amp in the same way the Echoplex was designed to be run in front of your amp. They share almost identical input and output circuit topologies, including the passive unbuffered mixer circuit of the EP-3. However, we tuned it to have a lower output impedance than the EP-3 to not load down the output as much while still retaining the open non-buffered output interface. A buffer does just what the name implies - it isolates one circuit from the next and can create a “disconnected” feeling that is subtle but a player who relies on touch-sensitive dynamics in his rig will appreciate the difference of not having the buffer. Having said that, the Belle Epoch will perform great in almost any pedal stacking situation. But for the most authentic Echoplex-like experience, we recommend that you run it before any foundation overdrive type pedals and after fuzzes, treble boosters, and the like. Catalinbread goal was simple make a reverb pedal that functions just like a real deal outboard spring reverb unit. And they've done it. Catalinbread felt that adding more knobs for the sake of adding knobs would take away from the experience, so they kept it down to the controls that were on the actual units. They only added or extended controls that contributed to the experience in a positive way. The DWELL knob controls how much signal is going into and driving reverb springs. As on the original unit, cranking this knob up can cause clipping on the wet side due to the signal crashing the springs. The Catalinbread Talisman Plate Reverb Pedal perfectly captures that classic plate-reverb sound - in a pedal that is 479.99% smaller than the leading plate reverb!

Plate reverb is an artificial effect that utilizes a sheet of metal that vibrates sympathetically with a soundwave that hits it. The basic architecture of a plate reverb unit has a large, thin sheet of metal (nearly 6.5’x3’ in the case of the legendary EMT140) that has a transducer at one corner driving the sheet in much the same way as a speaker would, on the other end a pickup to capture the vibrations of the metal sheet, and a mechanical dampener that reduces the plate vibration. The reverb sonically stays out of the way of the dry path due to the minimal initial reflections and a full warm reverb that tapers smoothly fades out into a tail. In the studio, plate reverbs were routinely employed due to the way they added a natural ambience without interfering with the original program material… That and the fact that even though they were nearly 7 feet long and 4 feet tall, plate reverb units were a heck of a lot smaller than a giant room or hall when ambience was needed on recordings.

Plate reverb units are great to use on just about every instrument including vocals. Though they sound particularly great with electric guitar due to the minimal early reflections which keeps plate reverbs from sounding too “effecty” and obvious. The warm quality of the full-bodied reverb naturally tapering off compliments perfectly the voice and range of the guitar. The problem has been until now, the giant size made plate reverb units prohibitive to use on the road.

Many products with so-called “plate reverb” settings often simply sounded too thin, metallic and crappy. Below noon to cut and above noon to boost. These are treble and bass shelving controls and have been carefully voiced for the SFT. In Stones mode, setting all controls at noon will give you a flat response with a slight emphasis on the lower mids to give that big bodied Ampeg sound. To get more of a mid-hump response, try starting with Bass at 9:00 and Treble at noon. The Treble control is voiced to boost not only the highs but the upper mids as well so you can turn the Treble control up a bit to get more mids to crunch through. Try setting the Treble from noon to about 1:30 to boost some upper mids without increasing the treble too much. Also, turning the Gain control up will provide more push in the midrange as well. And if you want to scoop the mids, just turn the Treble and Bass controls up. This is most effective when you run with lower Gain settings.

Range of Bass Knob:

Turning the Bass control down from noon gives a high-pass shelving response around 200hz. This allows you to tighten up the response and attenuate those woolly and woofy frequencies. Turning up the Bass control boosts all those frequencies. You’ll notice as the Bass control is turned towards maximum, there will be a huge bump in low end. Huge. For most purposes that is too much boost of the low end! That huge amount of low end boost is there so you can crank it for the fuzz setting in Stoner mode.

Range of Treble Knob:

Turning the Treble control down from noon gives a low-pass shelving response at around 1000hz. Typically you’d turn the Treble down below noon in the following situations: you’ve got the Gain set low for clean response, you’re in Stoner mode dialing in a woolly fuzz tone, or you’re playing bass. Turning up the Treble control first gives you a nice kick in the upper mids from noon to 2:00 and then beyond that the sound will get increasingly more trebly. For most uses on guitar in Stones mode, you’ll probably find yourself setting the Treble from noon to 2:00.

Gain Knob:

In Stones Mode, the range of the Gain Knob has been tuned to be very similar to that of the volume control on a big non-master volume tube amp. So, from minimum Gain to about 10:00, the response will be clean and bright. From 10:00 to noon, you’ll get edge-of-breakup response that is very sensitive to pick attack. From noon to 2:00, you’ll hit the overdrive sweet spot, just like that of most tube amps. And from 2:00 on, you’ll get increasing crunch and saturation. Now, just like with real tube amps, the amount of overdrive you get with the SFT depends on the type of guitar you’re using. So, if you’re using a Fender-style guitar with vintage output pickups, you’ll have to turn up the Gain more to crunch it out or use a booster/fuzz pedal in front. Just like how you would with a real amp. Or, if you’re using something with a humbucker, you’ll have to turn the Gain down to get a cleaner response. Some guitars with high-output pickups may crunch out the pedal even with the Gain turned down. Just like with a real amp! Also, just like a real amp, SFT responds really well to turning your guitar’s volume down. So you can set the SFT up for a nice saturated crunch and clean up instantly by rolling your guitar volume back. Also, just like real non-master volume tube amps, you’ll find that you set the tone controls differently depending on where the Gain is set. If you’re going for a clean sound with the Gain set below noon, you might end up using less Treble but more Bass. And conversely, if you’re going for cranked up amp sound, you’ll find you’ll want to turn the Bass down and the Treble up to get a good crunch sound that cuts through the mix.

Volume Knob:

The SFT was designed to give a huge amount of output even with clean low gain settings. So, if you’re running the Gain control really low, you’ll find that there is plenty of output on the Volume knob to boost that clean sound quite loud! Start off with a clean sound from your amp.

Stones/Stoner Modes:

This switch completely reconfigures the SFT and makes it become a completely new beast. Think Jekyll and Hyde! Two pedals in one! Stones Mode is super-refined and Stoner Mode is raw and unleashed! If you want the most authentic big Ampeg tube amp response, use Stones Mode. If you want a rippin’ high gain distortion sound that can achieve huge fuzz tones, use Stoner Mode.

Stones Mode:

Set Treble/Bass knobs to noon for a relatively flat response.

But if you’re running higher gain sounds, especially in Stoner mode, you’ll find that you won’t have to turn the Volume control up much at all.

Stoner Mode:

When you’re in Stoner Mode, the controls still work basically the same way but you’ll find that you will run the Treble, Bass, and Gain knobs lower than you would in Stones mode due to all the extra gain and frequency content.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0658/8848/5479/files/catalinbread-sft_54617_1_1_9610f81c-1f35-4b2b-a0c8-a18d8da0b22f.jpg?v=1787091635
