Sidney N. Shure originally founded The Shure Radio Company to sell home-built radio kits in the early 1920s. Not long afterward, the company expanded into the microphone market, starting with early carbon- and crystal-based designs before introducing the world’s first single-element dynamic cardioid microphone: the famous Unidyne 55. During the Second World War, Shure Incorporated produced specialized microphones for the Allied armed forces, eventually adopting MIL-SPEC durability standards for all of their microphones. After the War, Shure introduced a series of innovative products, including the first handheld wireless vocal mic (the Vagabond 88) and the first end-address unidirectional dynamic microphone (the Model 545 Unidyne III). As the company continued to grow and expand its international presence, Shure cemented its place as one of the most well-known audio brands in the world.
