Waveform shape selection is continuous rather than discrete: choose ramp, triangle, sawtooth, square or any position in between for hybrid shapes. Try out frequency modulation (fm), oscillator sync, waveform modulation for striking tones. Use feedback to route post-filter sound back into the oscillator mixer for effects ranging from mild bass boost to subharmonics/low-frequency howling.

Effects and envelopes

Oscillators and filters get your sound humming, but a little polish and refinement make it sing. Switching oscillators and filters on or off like an organ would be very limiting. Envelopes provide more nuanced and engaging results. Diva has two slots—one dedicated to the amplifier, the other to the filter—both with three models to choose from. Craft gently rising sounds, notes that fade slowly into the distance, or sharp percussion.

As a final touch you can put Diva’s two stereo effects slots to use. In keeping with the vintage feel, the available effects would be right at home in the studios of bygone days. Add space with the plate reverb and delay, or movement with the phaser, chorus and rotary speaker effects.

Subtle details

Small details can transform static, lifeless sounds into something much more lively and organic. The Trimmers panel is where you can make your sounds feel more analog. Control voice detuning per oscillator, adjust variance between individual voices (round robin), voice drift and more—adding life to your music. These options mirror the inherent variations in analog hardware. As the circuit boards are not always 100% the same (due to component tolerances), oscillator tuning may differ slightly, some envelopes are a little less snappy. The individual effects may be subtle, but they add up to a more authentic analog sound.

Dive into the Modifications panel for more modulation options and an opportunity to push Diva into more experimental and unusual territories. Modulation processors such as Invert, Add, Quantize and Lag open up fresh ideas for manipulating Diva. If you quickly modulate or sweep the delay time on a typical digital unit, unmusical glitches propagate through the feedback as the buffer is shortened or lengthened. A single knob lets you continuously blend between the five finely-tuned "color" macros. The differences may be subtle, but each one is rich in detail. In addition to obvious differences in frequency bandwidth, each comes with its own noise and dynamic characteristics, frequency loss over time, and several other qualities. The Saturation knob controls how prominent or subtle those characteristics should be, in case you want to dial back the colouration to better fit in the mix. The routing options let you mix or swap the input and feedback signals independently or even invert the feedback phase for various phase cancellation effects when delay times are set very short. Additionally, unlike hardware BBD units, Colour Copy's left and right output "taps" can be placed anywhere along the delay lines. This feature lets you move echos independently "forward in time" for e.g. ping-pong or "rushing" delays as well as various stereo chorus or flanger effects. All the good (saturation, transient smoothing, compression) as well as the bad (noise modulation, flutter, hiss) qualities are under your control. Construct your (im)perfect tape machine.

The sound

Once reserved for major studios, digital recording has become widespread. It offers pristine sound and comfortable editing at a fraction of the cost of multitrack tape. Despite all the advantages, however, digital audio can easily sound too clean and impersonal. So musicians, producers and audio engineers have turned to traditional analog tools to bring some life back into overly clinical recordings. A world of non-linear behaviours, distortion, saturation and much more arises during tape recording and playback. Bringing these coveted characteristics of magnetic tape into the digital realm, in unprecedented quality—this is what Satin is all about.

That tape sound depends on interaction between the various parts of a tape machine. Each contributes in one way or another—enhancing, reducing, combining—to generate the final sound.

Satin models individual components and lets them interact in the same way. For maximum flexibility in sound shaping, Satin is a toolkit of alternative parts, not an emulation of a single machine. Build your own custom tape unit. The perfect final sheen for your mixdown, or “glue” multiple drum tracks together, decode old NR-encoded cassette tape, or misuse Satin for extreme effects.

Delay and flange

Delay mode lets you construct your own tape delay machine rather than emulate any specific model. A few clicks and you will be deep in echo in no time. Choose between two or four “tape heads”, adjust tape speed, select tape material, turn up the feedback, select signal routing, add some filtering. You can add motion to each individual “tape head” for a more organic feel. Tweak the Service Panel options and give your sound the characteristic shimmer of a classic tape echo.

Flange mode emulates the special technique of running identical recordings on two tape machines, then lightly pressing a finger on the reels to move the recordings in and out of phase. It was a skill that required patience and light touch. Luckily, Satin now makes it much easier and faster, all at the press of a button. For longer flanging effects or more precise control you can use the slider, either manually or automated.

In service

Imagine opening up a tape machine, peeking “under the hood” and tinkering with the parts. That is what service technicians used to do, and it is what the Service Panel in Satin is for. It gives you detailed control over some of the more esoteric and characterful elements.

In the Tape section are perhaps the more readily identifiable attributes of tape recording: hiss, asperity, wow & flutter, crosstalk and bias. Dial in a little of each for a retro vibe or “glue”. Dial in the extreme settings and you can end up with the sound of poor quality tape left in someone’s basement far too long.

The Repro Head(s) parameters control the physical attributes of the tape heads. With Gap Width and Bump you can cut or boost certain frequencies and introduce resonances and fluctuations. Azimuth pushes the audio off-centre for interesting spatial effects, mimicking a skewed tape head.

Finally the Circuit section lets you change the inner EQ circuitry. Included are various industry standard EQ curves, should you want to mimic specific machines. But Satin goes a step further by allowing independent selection of the recording and reproduction EQ curves. Which you can abuse for weird processing effects, or to correct EQ errors in old recordings (see below).

Decoding

Selectable Compander and Circuit settings make Satin useful as a format converter.

If you have a tape recording with an unsuitable EQ, using Circuit’s independent RecEQ and ReproEQ selectors you can set a new target EQ curve and make changes. You can manually select wavetables, modulate the position via the modulation matrix, or even scan them automatically using various envelope and loop options, which let you animate wavetables without requiring an extra modulation source.

More features include a Reverse option to flip the wavetable back to front, Cyclic mode for seamless wavetable cycling, and different real-time interpolation methods.

Multi-Table

This feature splits the wavetable from between 2 and 16 parts. For instance, a wavetable with 30 frames can be split into 3 wavetables with 10 frames each - by setting the number of Tables to 3. The Multi Position knob scans those set tables. This opens up a second dimension of wavetable scanning, such as velocity crossfades or multisample support.

Optional scripting

Want to go even more in-depth? Wavetables in Hive are also available as .uhm files. These files contain scripts made with a proprietary wavetable generation and manipulation language. Getting started is easy and fun.

Interpolation

When using Wavetables, Hive provides 4 different algorithms for interpolating between frames: switch, crossfade, spectral, and zero phase. The appearance (and CPU usage) of waveforms can differ significantly, depending on the interpolation. The spectral and zero phase modes shift the relative phases of partials differently. The switch option only shows non-interpolated waveforms.

Arpeggiator and Sequencer

Hive's hexagon includes an ARP/SEQ area in which you can sculpt your complex and rhythmic loops.

Hive's arpeggiator features 4 octaves to select from, 6 different directions, and 4 options for the order. Additional features are Restart, which lets you set the number of notes the arpeggiator will play before jumping back to the beginning, and Frame, which limits the the length while driving the sequencer from the arpeggiator.

The sequencer features 3 different modes: Modulator, which doesn't trigger notes, but only CC values and Gate. Select Play, to trigger notes. Like the arpeggiator, the sequence will run whenever notes are being played and will stop when all notes are released. The last mode is Record, this lets you record sequences manually or through the arpeggiator.

Flexible Effects

Hive's hexagon includes 7 different effects: Distortion, Reverb, Equalizer, Chorus, Delay, Compressor, and Phaser.

Each effect state and position in the chain is easily controllable from the center of the hexagon. Click on one to enable or disable it, and order them to your liking: Like in other u-he plugins, effects in Hive are rearrangeable through drag and drop! This allows you to sculpt your sound even more through many experimental combinations.

Effects in Hive are fully-featured with many editable controls, a selection of presets, and the well known u-he quality. Want more? All controls are also modulatable thorugh the modulation matrix!

Modulation Matrix

Hive features a 2-page, 12-slot (6 per page) modulation matrix which allows you to connect modulation sources (LFOs, MIDI controls, envelopes, etc.) to more than 80 targets. Each modulator can be turned on or off, and lets you select 2 different targets, each with its own modulation depth control. The assignment is made easy with drag and drop. Preset support is also included.

New in 1.2: Performance controls

Version 1.2 introduces another new tab in Hive's hexagon: XY. In this page, you'll find a pad with 4 controls – simply connect them to your MIDI controllers for maximum fun on stage!

Hive is able to assign XY controls to parameters automatically. It looks into the structure of presets that have unused XY controls, and assigns them to the most appropriate XY macros (pre-defined sets of parameters).

System Requirements:

Mac OS X 10.7 or newer, Windows 7 or newer, or Linux

1GB RAM, more recommended

50MB free disk space

1000 × 600 or larger display

Modern CPU (Sandy Bridge or newer recommended)

Host software

Hive is not a standalone product, it requires host software. With the ability to connect any output into any input, ACE is a powerful synth with tools and features ready for beginners or seasoned users.

The “boxes and cables” philosophy of modular synthesizers gives you the freedom to create your own custom instruments. You can push these characteristics further using the Circuit Bending options.

If the bottom end needs beefing up, try adding the sub-oscillator. For more intense, complex sounds, try VCO2’s ring modulation, sync and cross modulation.

Mapping Generator

Not typically found in analogue synthesizers, ACE’s Mapping Generator is a useful addition with a variety of uses. The Mapping Generator is a list of up to 128 values. You can use the drawing tools to edit the values and create your own patterns, or choose pre-built shapes. This map can be stepped through for each played note, it can create per-note offsets, it can transform any modulation source or be used as the LFO2 waveform.

Filter

Like the oscillators, the two filters are modelled on analogue hardware and deliver satisfyingly analogue results. You can overdrive the filters without introducing any harsh distortion, and the resonance remains intact. Or you can take advantage of the self-oscillation feature for chaotic timbres and more experimental sound design.

For an extra aggressive sound, route your signal through both filters and crank the resonance on the second filter. Both filters are cascade type multimode circuits with two parallel outputs each.

Cables anywhere and everywhere

ACE takes after hardware modular synthesizers, although it is not a truly modular design, more correctly it is semi-modular. ACE has a default fixed architecture (like for instance the ARP 2600), which means you can start making noise immediately ‘out-of-the-box’. Any default routing can be overridden by patching cables, which means that the options are practically limitless.

ACE does not differentiate between audio signals and control signals. Any of the outputs can be plugged into any of the signal inputs. Hook things up, explore new ideas and crazy combinations. Try LFOs as audio oscillators or a VCO as LFO. Plug an LFO into a filter, then use the filter as an FM source for an oscillator.

Sound experimentation awaits, limited only by your imagination… and dinner time.

Signal sources

An array of output sockets provide signals from a variety of different sources: noise, MIDI controls (modwheel, velocity etc.), mapping generator and more…

Use these to add organic life-like dynamics, modulation and refinements your sounds.

Effects: Add final touches using the global effects. Signals are merged and sent onward, or split and sent to different inputs. In ACE the multiples do act as a simple mixer, or can be enlisted for much more interesting possibilities. That is why u-He renamed them Multiplex. Using the modulation input and some clever cable arrangements, the Multiplex modules can do ring modulation (RM), amplitude modulation (AM) or both at the same time. Or crossfading or inversion…

Envelopes: Without envelopes, your patches would just turn on and off with each note, organ style. Envelopes add dynamics over the length of the note. ACE has classic ADSR envelopes, but with a few extras directly available for more interesting results: Snap, fall/rise, level modulation, rate modulation, velocity. The envelopes can be further with modified in the Envelope Tweaks section. Switch on the singing envelopes for classic analogue retriggering behavior, or adjust the fall/rise limits.

System Requirements:

Mac OS X 10.7 or newer, Windows 7 or newer, or Linux

1GB RAM, more recommended

50MB free disk space

1000 × 600 or larger display

Modern CPU (Sandy Bridge or newer recommended)

Host software

ACE is not a standalone product, it requires host software. A combination of realtime circuit simulation and zero delay feedback (ZDF) design give Diva its remarkable sound. With ZDF, the delays normally produced when modeling analog circuits are vastly reduced, resulting in a much more authentic resonance behavior. Diva models five different filters found in classic hardware synthesizers. All filters have modulation options and the traditional cutoff and resonance controls, but each has their its character, quirks and options.

OSCILLATORS

Like the filters, Diva’s oscillators are also modeled on classic hardware. The five models offer a wide range of different characteristics that fundamentally affect the overall sound, giving you a broad palette to start with for your next riff, bass and pad. All five share common controls: waveform selection, octave range, mix or independent output volume controls, a noise source and plentiful modulation options. Plus a few touches unique to each model.

Triple VCO With three oscillators, Triple VCO is the largest of the oscillator panels.

These capabilities take Diva beyond the original hardware that inspired it.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:

Mac OS X 10.7 or newer

Windows 7 or newer

Linux logo Linux

1GB ram, more recommended

50MB free disk space

1000 × 600 or larger display

Modern CPU (Sandy Bridge or newer recommended)

Host software

Diva is not a standalone product, it requires host software.
