Designed by the now legendary Saul Walker, an adjunct instructor in music technology, the 550A has been used in recording studios throughout the world, among them the Record Plant and Sunset Sound, and by such musical greats as Jimmy Page, Phil Ramone, the Doobie Brothers, Stevie Wonder, Leon Russell, Frank Zappa, Marvin Gaye, Herbie Hancock, and Bob Dylan. In 2008 the API 550A was inducted into the Technology Hall of Fame at the annual Audio Engineering Society (AES) Convention held in San Francisco.

Walker, a fellow of AES, designed the equalizer in 1968, and the discrete 550A was first used as a modular OEM equalizer. As the industry rapidly embraced the sonic quality of the 550A, it quickly found its way into many custom console designs by Frank DeMedio and other leading engineers. Many of these consoles are still in use today.

Forty years later, the 550A remains the standard against which other EQs are measured, and it has played a major role in the recording industry for decades. Still copied but never duplicated, the 550A became API's standard channel module EQ when the company began manufacturing consoles in 1971. With virtually all existing units spoken for, popular demand for this EQ resulted in API finally resuming production in 2004.

What accounts for its popularity and longevity? "The 550A design provides a fast, repeatable, and virtually foolproof mechanism to enhance or accentuate specific segments of the audio spectrum or to de-emphasize other tonalities while maintaining the essential integrity of the program material," Walker says. He notes that though newer technology provides greater flexibility at lower cost, permitting more drastic alteration of the sound spectrum, many artists just prefer the sound of the original 550A.

Users of Walker's equalizer are fond of its acoustic properties – the 'sweet tonal change' coursing through the mix and its settings that allow for 'more bite or body' in the basses. "An equalizer is, in a way, a musical instrument," Walker says.

The 550A provides reciprocal equalization at 15 points in 5 steps of boost to a maximum of 12dB of gain at each point. The fifteen equalization points are divided into three overlapping ranges. The high and low frequency ranges are individually selectable as either peaking or shelving, and a band-pass filter may be inserted independently of all other selected equalization settings. Frequency ranges and boost/cut are selected by three dual-concentric switches and a push-button "in" switch allows the EQ to be silently inserted into the signal path. A small toggle switch is used to engage the band-pass filter.

The combination of Walker's incomparable 2520 op-amp, and his "Proportional Q" circuitry gives the 550A user an uncomplicated way to generate acoustically superior equalization.

This long-awaited, limited edition reissue is a continuation of the equalizers produced by API exactly as they were in the 1960's, featuring hand-wired switches, the original circuit board design and API founder Saul Walker's signature on the chassis. an EQ that has had such a part in the history of recording is continuing to make history in today's music.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0658/8848/5479/files/vintage_api_550a_sw_eq-saul_walker_edition_7ff1f816-e0d7-4030-92e1-e8576635895c.jpg?v=1787088874
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0658/8848/5479/files/used_a_designs_audio_em-peq_500_series_eq_07731d09-7d7f-496c-83fa-bb432450eb58.jpg?v=1787088989
api-550a-1-eq-used
API 550 A-1 EQ (Vintage)

Clean used example of this unit. One way I can usually identify an A-1, without looking inside, is the rubbery feel of the rotary switches instead of the snap you feel with a 550A. 550A-1's were sometimes found on ebay and sold as 550A's by sellers who may or may not have known what it was because often the serial number sticker said "550A" without a mention of A-1, and sometimes there was no serial number sticker.

Looking at the inside, there is one 2520 driving the output transformer with a feed-forward design using a NPN transistor. The other amps are IC's with an LF356 balancing the input and a TL074CN quad amp powering the bands and filter. The front rotary switches plugged into the circuit board with connectors.

Contrary to what internet loudmouths may say, the 550A-1 was not a bad module, it sounds very similar to a 550A with 2 or 4 db and becomes more noticeable when pushed to 9 or 12 db, which is probably where most people would boost or cut if something was wrong. Overall, it was a good design with good noise performance and had the same headroom as any 550A due to the 2520 and output transformer in the output stage. It is not exactly a 550A with the Q difference and not quite as full in the low end, in my own tests, but still better than other eq designs of its time, as the popularity of using IC throughout in the late 70s became prevalent and overall quality diminished.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0658/8848/5479/files/used_api_550a-1_eq_f347ff82-33e7-4cb3-bb03-8e4fdc82dd1c.jpg?v=1787088989
api-550a-eq-used
API 550A EQ (Vintage)

Vintage selectable-frequency 3 band EQ, with overlapping frequencies and hi/lo pass filters. Incorporating API's exclusive circuitry and proprietary components (such as the legendary API 2520 Op Amp), the 550b artfully blends the past with the present. So many hit records still depend on the unique 550 sound that engineers around the world find it to be an invaluable tool. In fact, the 550b design has been taken from the original blue prints and spec control drawings from the API archives. It is unlike any other EQ you will ever use.

Rather than offer a huge assortment of complex features, the API 550b provides exactly the right number of controls. Its four EQ bands are overlapped significantly to aid in dual roles as problem solver and sweetening device with each band offering seven switchable filter frequencies that span four-to-five octaves. These frequencies, purposely selected to be musical rather than numeric, were selected by an experienced "who's who" list of the industry's most proficient engineers.

Making use of API's "Proportional Q," an innovation designed by Saul Walker in the '60s, the 550b intuitively widens the filter bandwidth at minimal settings and narrows it at higher settings without the need for additional bandwidth controls. This unique feature minimizes the "phase-shift" sound found in many equalizers. In addition, the reciprocal nature of the 550b enables the user to "undo" what has been done previously with exact precision.

The benefits of the API 550b are most obvious to those who work with EQ on a continuous basis. If major tonal restructuring is required, the extraordinary headroom made possible with API's 2520 Op Amp offers the predictable and warm analog performance, even under duress. With a surprisingly wide range of tonal variations, the 550b is an invaluable and professional audio tool with great flexibility and excellent sonic ability.

Note: This unit is not VPR compliant and may not work with every 500 Series rack

Following in the rich tradition of English 60s and 70s console design, Chandler Limited enters the 500 race furiously with its new Little Devil Equalizers and Compressors. Each shelving filter allows for a boost or cut of up to 12 db, providing steeply rising or falling curve shapes. When these curves are boosted or cut aggressively, they enable the second and even third harmonic to be varied in relation to their fundamental, allowing the natural sound of a musical instrument to be varied. When used less aggressively, one can attenuate bands of frequencies above or below the “turnover” point to their desired levels. These sections each provide EQ curves that approximate to 6 dB/ and give a true “Flat” response when this section is engaged but not boosted or attenuated.

Low Frequency (LF) Shelving Filter

Continuously variable from 30Hz to 300 Hz, allowing for a wide range of applications, from filtering out low rumbles caused by air conditioning units to taming an instrument with too much low end or even adding a little bit of “oomph” to a thin mix, proving to be an indispensable asset in the signal chain.

High Frequency (HF) Shelving Filter

continuously variable from 2.5 kHz to 25 kHz, giving this section of the EQ a valuable range of operation. It is a 3-band, two-channel system with input and output gain controls, high-cut and low-cut filters as well as the new QURE control for enhancing the presence and room imaging of vocals, instruments and complex stereo material.

Both balanced XLR and balanced stereo jacks are provided for signal connections to and from the Qure. The proportional-Q principle provides precise control over a frequency range, from 15Hz to 21kHz, while the low noise level of -99dB (A-weighted), and the enormous dynamic range of 113dB make the Qure ideally suited for mastering and cutting. By employing circuitry designed around the principles of perceived sound, rather than simply designing by numbers, the Qure overcomes the limitations of conventional parametric equalisers.

The Qure circuitry is a new SPL development which gives the name for the unit and also represents a new technology, which uses coils to influence the presence and the spatial imaging. At the same time it is ideally suited to "cure" recordings from digital harshness.

The signal runs through a tube circuitry featuring an 12AX7-LPS double triode tube in a mixed current/voltage coupling mode. This stage is extremely clip-resistant and produces a pleasant and musical sounding tube-THD spectrum. The Qure On switch puts a coil/condenser/resistor filter network (LCR) into the tube output stage. This network is integrated into the coupling path of the tube and reacts on the dynamic response of the input signal by influencing THD spectra and phase response. The Qure potentiometer changes the frequency response and produces a fresh and silky top-end and a mid-range free of sharpness and harshness. For example, vocals can be "placed" in the front of a mix without having to provide more "space", also background or layer sounds can gain improved spatial depth.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0658/8848/5479/files/used_spl_qure_eq_db338761-7f89-40ce-85e6-c55a2b0e2096.jpg?v=1787089023
universal-audio-550-a-filter-used
Universal Audio 550-A Filter (Vintage)

Very clean used example of this unit, with rack ears. Extremely fast to set and reset using accurate zero detents, the curve shaping potential of the 560 is unmatched. At home both in field recording and the studio environment, this "new-old" version is a re-issue of the original 560 with improved resolution in the critical area of ±4 dB. Compared to the Massive Passive, the toggle switch that selects between Bell and Shelf, has become a 3 position switch, to introduce the new higher Q Bell curves on the 4 highest frequencies. These features give the Mini-Massive even more power and flexibility to achieve that elusive big round tight bottom and silky atmospheric top.

The Mini-Massive uses 4 of the new Manley Rapture Amplifiers for gain. These came about in the long search for the cleanest and most musically involving gain stage we could get and were originally intended for a cost-no-object digital / analog converter. These are further augmented by both series and shunt power supply regulators, to provide a refined low noise power supply. Like the Massive Passive, huge headroom is available and the Mini will output +30 dBv balanced into 50 ohms. And rather than using unstable cross-coupled outputs to drive balanced or unbalanced loads, the Mini-Massive can accommodate balanced, or unbalanced +4, or unbalanced –10 loads, and each one is always driven optimally. It plays well with others.

And for those who would prefer transformer outputs, there is an option for the same transformers as in the Massive Passive. These can add a subtle degree of warmth and smoothness by themselves. A 3-way toggle on the back panel (IRON) not only allows those with the transformer option, to bypass the transformer, or to use the transformers, or to force them into a more vintage-like flavor for even more fat and aggressive colors.

Of course, for those who want a Mono 4-band EQ only need to patch the output of Channel 1 into the input of Channel 2. The Mini-Massive is a clean, lean machine, with the same EQ performance, and then some, where we wanted it most.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0658/8848/5479/files/used_api-550b_eq_pair_horizontal_style_3c7116fd-1373-4045-bb94-303cac4a4192.jpg?v=1787089094
manley-massive-passive-1633-used
Manley Massive Passive #1633 (Used)

The Manley Massive Passive is a two channel, four band equalizer, with additional high pass and low pass filters. "Passive" refers to the tone shaping part of this clever new EQ design, not using any active circuitry.
